I'm a little confused... I too was raised Catholic, but I struggle with the focus on Mary, rather than Christ...crucified, for our sins, to share His grace, through us, to help our hurting world. I LOVE that Mary was a "willing servant" as we all should be, like Saul/Paul, and Abraham, and all of the examples of faithful followers of God. The Word of God says that ...

Romans 8:35-40 (New King James Version)

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:
“ For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”[a]
37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

I don't see Mary in that...just HIM. Trust me, I love the example of Mary, but we do have, direct contact, and access, to HIM, and I do believe that HE alone, consecrates me. The Word of God also says that only HE is Holy, and WORTHY of our adoration...for He died on the cross for MY sins, and He would have if it was only ME.

I'm sorry.. I mean not to offend... It's just that I'm just in the Word a lot, and it is all about HIM, and LOVE, and FAITH, and TRUST, and SEEKING HIM... I didn't know Him when I was growing up as a Catholic... I knew "about" Him,... but later in life.. as my world was crashing in on me... I sought Him ... and FOUND Him.... and now I KNOW Him... and LOVE Him so very much....

Joey, our focus is always on Jesus. Mary always directs us to Jesus; read the few words she spoke as written in the Bible and you will see that. She is our direct way to Jesus. Mary is all about Jesus; she too knows Him, and loves Him, much more than you or I ever can. Jesus was obedient to His parents during life, do you think he ignores her now? He hears her prayers, because they are always in conformity with the Will of God; Mary is "full of grace" -which she dispenses to us; and so we would be foolish not to turn to our Mother and ask her help. We, like Jesus, are her children; Jesus gave her to us on the Cross.If we imitate Mary, we will grow in humility, charity, loving kindness and piety. If we imitate Mary, we will be pleasing to God, because we will be putting the will of God ahead of our own will.
I could go on for hours on the benefits of Mary, but I suggest you read the writings of Saints who are so much more eloquent than I- St. Alphonsus Ligouri's "The Glories of Mary" and especially St. Louis De Montfort"s "True Devotion to Mary". Remember that we worship God, but we have devotion to and veneration for, Mary and the other Saints. They assist us in our journey which ends in heaven. As it says in the Creed, "I believe in the Communion of Saints".
These are gifts from God, ways to assist in our salvation. Never belittle or undervalue a gift from God.
