The Life of Christ- Quotes from Bishop Fulton J. Sheen

One of the books I am currently reading is The Life of Christ, by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. It is full of little sentences that give one pause, food for meditation and prayer.

God writes His name on the soul of every man.

We need a Christ who will restore moral indignation, Who will make us hate evil with a passionate intensity, and love goodness to a point where we can drink death like water.

The nearer Christ comes to a heart, the more it becomes conscious of its guilt; it will then either ask for His mercy and find peace, or else it will turn against Him because it is not yet ready to give up its sinfulness.

It is part of the discipline of God to make His loved ones perfect through trial and suffering. Only by carrying the Cross can one reach the Resurrection.

The sun no sooner rises than it shines; the fire is no sooner kindled than it burns; so grace acts as soon as the soul cooperates.

As I read further I will share more of these gems of Wisdom with you.

So, according to Bishop Sheen, what is it that brings Christ closer to a heart? God or Christ? Or, does it not matter? (I suppose I should just buy the book and not pester you with these questions!)

Elizabeth, in this particular paragraph Bishop Sheen doesn't say what brings Christ closer to the heart, but from general reading , the heart must be open to Him, and be fortified by prayer, receiving the Sacraments, and spiritual reading. For a heart to come closer to Christ, it must leave behind attachment to worldly things.
